Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tsp. neutral oil
  • 1 frozen hash brown patty, thawed
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 1 slice American cheese (preferably Kraft)
  • 1 large Eggland’s Best fried egg
  • 1 slice cooked bacon, finely chopped (optional)
  • Hot sauce (such as Frank’s), for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat 1 teaspoon of neutral oil until shimmering and hot enough for cooking.
  2. Cook the first side of the hash brown: Add the thawed hash brown patty to the skillet and cook undisturbed for 1 to 2 minutes until the bottom is browned and crispy.
  3. Flip and press: Flip the hash brown and gently press it down with a lightly greased burger press or spatula to flatten. Use a spatula to ensure it isn’t sticking to the pan.
  4. Cook the other side: Cook the hash brown for another 1 to 2 minutes until the bottom is browned and crispy.
  5. Season and add cheese: Flip the hash brown back, lightly season with kosher salt, then top with a slice of American cheese. Cover the skillet to help the cheese melt, cooking for about 30 seconds.
  6. Assemble tostada: Transfer the cheese-melted hash brown to a plate. Top it with the fried egg and sprinkle finely chopped cooked bacon over it if using.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite hot sauce alongside for added flavor and heat.

Notes

  • Thaw the hash brown patty before cooking for best results and even browning.
  • You can substitute American cheese for cheddar or pepper jack for a different flavor.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon or replace it with sautéed mushrooms or avocado slices.
  • Adjust the amount of hot sauce to your liking or omit if preferred milder flavors.
  • Use a nonstick skillet and lightly grease your spatula or press to avoid sticking while flattening the hash brown.
