Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 egg
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 tsp baking soda
- 1/3 tsp salt
Add-ins
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup M&Ms (divided)
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cookie bars evenly.
- Cream the butter and sugars: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Beat together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Add vanilla and egg: Incorporate the vanilla extract and egg into the creamed mixture, beating again until fully combined and slightly fluffy.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt to ensure even distribution of leavening and seasoning.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, beating gently until just combined to avoid overmixing.
- Fold in chocolate chips and M&Ms: Stir in the chocolate chips and most of the M&Ms, reserving some to sprinkle on top for decoration and added texture.
- Spread the dough: Evenly spread the cookie dough into an 8×6 inch or 9×7 inch baking pan, smoothing the surface with a spatula. Sprinkle the reserved M&Ms evenly over the top.
- Bake the bars: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 18–20 minutes or until the surface turns golden brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
- Cool and slice: Remove from the oven and allow the cookie bars to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, slice into squares for serving.
Notes
- Ensure butter is softened but not melted for the best texture.
- Do not overmix the dough once flour is added to keep the bars tender.
- You can substitute M&Ms with any candy-coated chocolate or colorful chips.
- If desired, chill the dough slightly before baking to prevent spreading.
- Store bars in an airtight container to maintain freshness for up to 3 days.
