Fruits
- 8–10 medium apples (mixed varieties like Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith)
- 1 large orange (peeled and sliced)
Spices and Flavorings
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 4–5 whole cloves
- 1–2 star anise
- 1 inch piece of fresh ginger (sliced)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Sweetener
- 1/2 cup brown sugar or honey (optional, adjust to taste)
Liquid
- Prepare Ingredients: Wash and roughly chop the apples, leaving the skins on and removing the cores. Peel and slice the orange. Place all the fruit into the Instant Pot.
- Add Spices and Sweetener: Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, sliced fresh ginger, ground allspice, nutmeg, and brown sugar or honey if using into the pot. Pour in 10-12 cups of water, ensuring the fruit is covered.
- Pressure Cook: Secure the lid on the Instant Pot and set it to cook on High Pressure for 15 minutes. Once cooking completes, allow a natural pressure release for 20 minutes to gently finish the infusion.
- Mash Fruit: Open the lid and use a potato masher to mash the cooked apples and oranges, helping to release more flavor into the liquid.
- Strain Cider: Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large bowl, pressing the fruit to extract all the liquid and create a smooth cider.
- Adjust and Serve: Taste the cider and add more sweetener if desired. Serve warm, garnished with extra orange slices or cinnamon sticks for presentation.
Notes
- Using mixed apple varieties adds depth and complexity to the cider’s flavor.
- If you prefer a thicker cider, reduce the amount of water slightly.
- This cider can be refrigerated and reheated gently for up to 5 days.
- For an adult version, consider adding a splash of bourbon or rum before serving.
- Adjust sweetness according to your preference by adding more or less brown sugar or honey.
