This rich and creamy toffee sauce is a perfect indulgent topping for desserts like ice cream, pies, and cakes. Made with brown sugar, butter, and cream, the sauce is simple to prepare and has a deep caramel flavor enhanced by a touch of vanilla and optional sea salt flakes for balance.

Ingredients

Scale

Toffee Sauce Ingredients

  • 200 g (1 cup) light brown sugar
  • 100 ml (1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) heavy/whipping cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 125 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Add the brown sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and unsalted butter to a small saucepan.
  2. Dissolve sugar: Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar fully dissolves into the mixture.
  3. Boil and simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 2 minutes, being cautious as the sauce will be hot and bubbling.
  4. Add salt (optional): If desired, stir in sea salt flakes or sprinkle some on the sauce when serving to enhance the flavor.
  5. Cool and reheat: Allow the toffee sauce to thicken as it cools. If prepared ahead of time, gently reheat before serving to restore its pourable consistency.

Notes

  • Use heavy or whipping cream for the best rich and smooth texture.
  • Make sure to stir continuously to avoid burning the sugar during heating.
  • The vanilla extract adds depth to the caramel flavor but can be omitted if preferred.
  • For a saltier contrast, sprinkle sea salt flakes over desserts just before serving.
  • Store leftover toffee sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator; reheat gently before use.
