Bread and Cheese
- 4 slices of sourdough bread
- 2 tsp vegetable oil
- 2 tsp salted butter
- 2 tbsp grated mozzarella cheese
- 2 tbsp grated cheddar cheese
Tuna Mixture
- 130 g canned tuna (90 g drained weight)
- 1/2 red onion, finely chopped (adjust amount to taste)
- 1 pickled gherkin, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp pickled jalapenos, finely chopped
- 1 tsp capers, finely chopped
- 1/2 tbsp plain yogurt
- 1/2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp honey
- Black pepper, to taste
- Assemble the Cheese Sandwiches: Lay out the four slices of sourdough bread. Between each pair of slices, sprinkle 1 tbsp of grated mozzarella and 1 tbsp of grated cheddar cheese, then close to form two cheese sandwiches.
- Grill the Sandwiches: Heat a frying pan or skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil along with the salted butter. Once the butter melts, place the cheese sandwiches into the pan. Fry each side for about 4 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, adjusting heat as needed to prevent burning.
- Prepare Tuna Filling: While the sandwiches are grilling, combine the drained tuna, finely chopped red onion, pickled gherkins, pickled jalapenos, chopped capers, mayonnaise, yogurt, paprika, honey, and black pepper in a bowl. Mix thoroughly and taste to adjust seasoning to your liking.
- Assemble Tuna Melts: Once the cheese sandwiches are golden and melted, remove them from the pan. Carefully pull apart each sandwich to reveal the cheese pull. Spoon the prepared tuna mixture onto one side of each sandwich, then place the other half of the grilled cheese on top. Press gently to combine and seal, then slice in half and serve immediately for the best experience.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of red onion to your taste if you prefer a milder flavor.
- Reducing the heat during frying helps prevent the bread from burning while melting the cheese perfectly.
- You can substitute sourdough bread with other sturdy bread types like ciabatta or multigrain if preferred.
- Use low-fat yogurt and light mayonnaise to reduce calorie content.
- For a spicier kick, increase the quantity of pickled jalapenos.
- Serve the tuna melt immediately to enjoy the cheese while it’s warm and gooey.
