Ingredients

Scale

Pastry and Filling

  • 1 17 oz sheet puff pastry, frozen and thawed
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Topping

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it is hot enough for the puff pastry to rise and bake properly.
  2. Make Pumpkin Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine pumpkin puree, brown sugar, softened cream cheese, and pumpkin pie spice. Mix well until smooth and evenly blended.
  3. Roll Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet slightly to a thinner layer, making sure it’s not too thick.
  4. Spread Filling: Evenly spread the pumpkin mixture over half of the puff pastry sheet, leaving a small border along the edges to prevent filling from leaking out during baking.
  5. Fold Pastry: Fold the pastry over the filling to cover it completely, pressing edges gently to seal the two layers together.
  6. Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the folded pastry into 1/2-inch wide strips. Take each strip and twist it gently to form a spiral shape.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Place the twisted strips onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each pastry twist with melted butter to enhance browning and flavor.
  8. Add Topping: Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl, then sprinkle this generously over the buttered twists.
  9. Bake: Bake the twists in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until they are puffed up and golden brown.
  10. Cool and Serve: Let the twists cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm, optionally with whipped cream for dipping.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh or high-quality canned pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling.
  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed but still cold for easy handling and better puff during baking.
  • If you prefer a stronger spice flavor, increase pumpkin pie spice by 1/2 teaspoon.
  • These twists are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be reheated briefly to restore crispness.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute cream cheese and butter with plant-based alternatives.
  • Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter for clean, even strips to make twisting easier.
