4.9 from 131 reviews

Create spooky and fun mozzarella cheese skulls using fresh mozzarella balls and silicone skull molds. This simple recipe offers two cooking methods—oven baking or microwaving—to soften the cheese, allowing you to press it into detailed skull shapes and chill for a unique, delicious appetizer or party snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese

  • 6 ounces small fresh mozzarella balls (Ciligiene, pearl, or cherry sized)
  • Cooking spray (for silicone mold)
  • Optional: paprika or chili powder for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mold: Spray the silicone skull mold with cooking spray to prevent sticking and set it on a rimmed baking sheet if using the oven for stability.
  2. Add the Cheese: Place one small fresh mozzarella ball into each cavity of the silicone skull mold.
  3. Heat the Cheese (Oven Method): Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the mold with mozzarella balls for 6-8 minutes until the cheese softens and becomes pliable.
  4. Heat the Cheese (Microwave Method): Alternatively, place the sprayed mold with mozzarella balls flat in the microwave and heat on high for about 30 seconds. If the cheese isn’t soft enough, microwave in additional 10-30 second increments until pliable, keeping in mind microwave power varies.
  5. Shape the Skulls: Carefully remove the hot mold from the oven or microwave. Using a paper towel or napkin, press each softened cheese ball firmly into the mold cavities to form the detailed skull shapes and absorb any excess liquid.
  6. Chill the Skulls: Place the filled mold in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to help the cheese hold its shape.
  7. Remove and Decorate: Gently pop the mozzarella skulls out of the mold. Optionally, brush each skull with a little paprika or chili powder to highlight the features and add a touch of color.
  8. Repeat as Desired: Repeat these steps to make as many mozzarella skulls as you like, perfect for serving at themed parties or gatherings.

Notes

  • Use fresh mozzarella balls that are small and uniform in size for the best fitting and shaping in the molds.
  • Be careful when handling the heated molds as the cheese and mold will be hot.
  • The paprika or chili powder not only adds color but also provides a mild smoky or spicy flavor to complement the cheese.
  • Chilling the cheese in the molds helps preserve the skull shape when removed.
  • Microwave power varies widely; adjust heating time accordingly to avoid melting or burning the cheese.
