Ingredients

Scale

Cake Batter

  • 1 white cake mix
  • Water, eggs, and oil as called for on the cake mix box
  • 3 Tbsp. dark cocoa powder
  • Orange food coloring gel
  • Black food coloring gel

Frosting and Decoration

  • 1 (16 oz.) can white frosting
  • Orange food coloring gel
  • Black food coloring gel
  • Halloween sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a bundt pan thoroughly with baking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Cake Batter: Prepare the white cake mix according to the directions on the box, using the specified amounts of water, eggs, and oil.
  3. Divide Batter: Remove one cup of cake batter and place it in a separate bowl. Repeat with another cup of cake batter so you have three portions: one in the original bowl and two separate one-cup bowls.
  4. Color the Batter: To one cup of batter, add orange food coloring gel until the color is bold. To the second cup, mix in 2 tablespoons of dark cocoa powder and stir. Then add black food coloring gel to achieve a deep black color.
  5. Layer the Batter in Pan: Pour the black cake batter into the bottom of the prepared bundt pan first. Next, pour the original white batter over the black layer carefully without stirring. Finally, layer the orange batter on top, again without mixing.
  6. Bake Cake: Place the bundt pan in the oven and bake according to the time and temperature guidelines on the cake mix box, typically about 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool the Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare Icing Base: Microwave the entire can of white frosting in short increments (10-15 seconds) until it’s slightly warmed and pourable.
  9. Drizzle Frosting: Place the cooled cake on a wire rack over a cookie sheet or waxed paper for easy cleanup. Drizzle some of the warmed white frosting over the cake as desired.
  10. Color and Drizzle Orange Frosting: Take about half of the remaining frosting and tint it with orange food coloring gel. Drizzle this orange frosting over the cake.
  11. Color and Drizzle Black Frosting: To the remaining frosting, add about 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and black food coloring gel until reaching a dark black color. Heat briefly if needed to achieve a drizzling consistency and thin with a tiny bit of milk if too thick. Drizzle the black frosting over the cake.
  12. Decorate: Sprinkle Halloween-themed sprinkles over the frosted cake for a festive finish.
  13. Serve: Allow the frosting to set slightly. Slice and serve your spooky, colorful Halloween bundt cake!

Notes

  • To avoid mixing layers, pour each batter gently and do not swirl.
  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without thinning the batter.
  • Warm frosting makes it easier to drizzle smoothly.
  • Add a small splash of milk if frosting is too thick to drizzle.
  • Allow cake to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Adjust amount of sprinkles based on preference for decoration.
