Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Gravy

  • 1¼ cups evaporated milk
  • ¾ cup chicken broth
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon
  • ¾ teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water (for slurry)
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce Mix: In a medium bowl, whisk together evaporated milk, chicken broth, chicken bouillon cube, poultry seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper until well combined.
  2. Add Chicken to Slow Cooker: Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts into a 6-quart slow cooker. Pour the prepared milk and broth mixture over the chicken.
  3. Cook the Chicken: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or on HIGH for 2-3 hours, until the chicken is tender and fully cooked through.
  4. Thicken the Gravy: Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and cold water to create a slurry. Stir the slurry into the liquid in the slow cooker. Cook the gravy on HIGH for an additional 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
  5. Finish the Gravy: Once thickened, whisk in the butter until melted and incorporated. Taste the gravy and season with additional salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Combine and Serve: Shred or slice the cooked chicken and return it to the thickened gravy. Stir gently to coat the chicken evenly with the gravy. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can use chicken thighs instead of breasts if you prefer a juicier texture.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially if your chicken broth or bouillon is already salted.
  • For a smoother gravy, strain the cooking liquid before adding the cornstarch slurry.
  • The gravy thickens further upon standing, so if it becomes too thick, whisk in a little water or broth to loosen it.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
