This fresh and vibrant Cranberry Relish recipe combines tart green apples, juicy cranberries, and a whole seedless orange, including its peel, ground together and sweetened with granulated sugar. It is a perfect make-ahead condiment to add a burst of citrusy, tangy flavor to your holiday meals or any festive occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruits

  • 2 cups rinsed raw cranberries
  • 2 peeled and cored tart green apples, cut into thick slices
  • 1 large, whole seedless orange with peel, cut into sections

Sweetener

  • 1 to 2 cups granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your grinder: Set up your grinder on a stable surface with a bowl or pan beneath to catch the ground fruit and any juice drippings. You can use an old-fashioned grinder with a medium-sized plate, a grinder attachment for a KitchenAid mixer, or a food processor. If using a food processor, pulse gently to avoid turning the fruit into mush. Alternatively, finely chop all fruit by hand, though this is more labor-intensive.
  2. Grind the fruit: Push the cranberries, orange sections (including the peel), and apple slices through the grinder or pulse them gently in the food processor, alternating fruits so that they combine evenly. This ensures a well-mixed texture and flavor.
  3. Add sugar and dissolve: Stir in the granulated sugar, starting with less than one cup and gradually adding more in 1/4 cup increments until you reach your desired sweetness. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for about 45 minutes to allow the sugar to fully dissolve.
  4. Store and serve: Once the sugar is dissolved, transfer the relish to a container and refrigerate until ready to use. This relish can be served chilled or at room temperature with your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Be sure to include the orange peel when grinding for added zest and flavor.
  • Adjust sugar quantity based on your sweetness preference and the tartness of your fruit.
  • If you don’t have a grinder or food processor, finely chopping by hand is an option but takes more time and effort.
  • Allow the relish to chill for several hours or overnight to enhance flavors before serving.
