Bread Dough

  • 2 pounds frozen bread dough

Egg Mixture

  • 10 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • 2 ounces cream cheese

  • 1 pound turkey sausage
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Plan ahead by removing the frozen bread dough from the freezer and placing it in a loaf pan at room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap and allow it to thaw and rise for 5-6 hours until fully risen.
  2. Scramble the eggs: In a glass bowl, whisk the 10 eggs thoroughly. Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add the eggs. Stir continuously with a spatula until the eggs are nearly cooked through but still soft.
  3. Add cream cheese to eggs: Mix in the cream cheese by folding it into the eggs while continuing to cook gently until the eggs are fully set and the cream cheese is well incorporated. Remove from heat.
  4. Brown the sausage: In a separate skillet over medium heat, cook the turkey sausage, breaking it apart as it cooks, until no longer pink. Drain off any excess fat and set aside.
  5. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll one loaf of bread dough into a 10 by 14 inch rectangle.
  6. Assemble the stromboli: Sprinkle half a cup of shredded cheddar cheese down the center lengthwise of the dough. Spoon half of the scrambled egg and cream cheese mixture over the cheese, followed by half the cooked turkey sausage. Top with another half cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Repeat assembly: Repeat step 5 and 6 with the second loaf of bread dough and the remaining fillings.
  8. Close the stromboli: Using kitchen scissors or a pizza cutter, make cuts about 3 inches long and 1 ½ inches apart along both long sides of the dough. Starting at one end, fold strips of dough alternately from one side to the other over the filling to create a criss-cross pattern, tucking in the ends to seal. Repeat for the second stromboli.
  9. Apply egg wash: Place both strombolis on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Whisk together the large egg and water, then brush this egg wash lightly over the top of each stromboli to ensure a golden crust.
  10. Bake the stromboli: Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. If the tops brown too quickly, loosely cover with foil. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing each into 10 pieces to serve.
